Let’s talk about Lupus for a minute.  You’ve probably noticed that this month I’ve ramped up the talk about this disease.  May is Lupus Awareness Month.

For now I give you the driving force in my fight against this disease.  It’s not myself and my own health issues.  It’s my mother.  She is the most incredible and strong woman I have ever known.  She was diagnosed when I was twelve years old.  Over the last eighteen years I’ve watched her fight and never give up.

She’s in the hospital right now for a surgery that she’s needed to have for quite some time.  This is the main reason I’m visiting home, to help her on the recovery end.  

She’s going to be fine, but the fact listed above is what led to her needing the surgery she just came out of.  Once this disease was considered chronic it was no longer a priority.  Chronic is no longer acceptable, we need a cure.  We need to improve the quality of life and lifespan of the men and women affected by lupus.

The first treatment for Lupus took over 100 years to be developed due to a lack of funding.  In the course of the last SIX decades there has been ONE new FDA approved drug.  We need more funding.  Take a look at the info graphic above to learn more about how Lupus affects the body, and then if you can please take the time to visit www.lupus.org/petition and ask Congress to approve more funding for lupus research.  Help us solve this cruel mystery.
